What is Chiropractic? The WHO defines 'Chiropractic' as a health care profession that is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the general health. There is a specific emphasis on manual techniques including joint manipulation.

Is Chiropractic manipulation safe?Yes! Chiropractic is widely recognised as one of the safest, drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuro-musculo-skeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential side effects. The risks associated with chiropractic are very small. Most patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic care, however, some experience mild soreness, stiffness or aches, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours. As with all hands-on treatment, as long as the treatment is provided by a qualified and skilled professional, such as a doctor of chiropractic, the treatment provided is quite safe.

What is involved in a Chiropractic consult? The first consult involves a case history and physical examination prior to assessing the desired region(s). On regional examination, a chiropractor may perform orthopedic testing (which is used to evaluate for musculoskeletal impairment), dermatomal testing (to note if there are any sensation deficits), reflex testing (to confirm the integrity of the spinal cord), myotome testing (evaluating and grading muscle strength), in addition to range of motion and myofascial examinations. Thereafter, a diagnosis is made and various treatment options are explained. Together the chiropractor and patient decide on the best course of treatment and the treatment is provided. Follow-up treatments involve a re-assessment of the regional(s) to see if the patients condition has improved or not. Thereafter, treatment is provided based on the regional findings. It is important to know that chiropractors can send for further investigations (e.g. blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound) should they suspect certain medical conditions that require investigations in order to be diagnosed.

How does Chiropractic work?Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the functioning of every cell in the human body. The delicate spinal cord is housed in the spinal column; the pelvis and the spinal column is made up of 76 joints. When these bones lose their normal movement (can be caused by a fall, bad posture, poor sleeping position, sedentary lifestyle, the birthing process etc.), nerve function is impaired. Chiropractic helps restore normal spinal functioning, which reduces interference and allows the body to heal itself. Chiropractic helps to assist in your natural healing processes, as well as increasing range of motion and reducing muscle tension. It is important to note that the extremities and not only can the spine be adjusted. Mal-alignment in the joints of the extremities can also benefit from chiropractic care.
